(30-Day Spoken Chinese Beginner Plan)
🗓 This is Day 8 of the 30-Day Spoken Chinese Beginner Plan
🔙 Back to Full Course: Spoken Chinese for Beginners
Today you will learn how to order food and drinks in a simple Chinese restaurant, how to ask for something, how to say what you want, and how to say thank you politely. Study time: 15–20 minutes. Indian context: Think about ordering in a small restaurant or café. You don’t need big sentences. Short and clear Chinese works perfectly.
Qǐng — Please. Use this to be polite when you ask for something.
Wǒ yào … — I want … Use this to order food or drinks.
Zhège — This one. Use this when pointing to something on the menu.
Nàge — That one. Use this when pointing to something a little far.
Shuǐ — Water.
Chá — Tea.
Kāfēi — Coffee.
Mǐfàn — Rice.
Miàntiáo — Noodles.
Xièxie — Thank you.
Simple tip: In Chinese, you can order like this: Qǐng + Wǒ yào + food or drink name.
Qǐng, wǒ yào shuǐ. — Please, I want water.
Qǐng, wǒ yào chá. — Please, I want tea.
Qǐng, wǒ yào kāfēi. — Please, I want coffee.
Wǒ yào mǐfàn. — I want rice.
Wǒ yào miàntiáo. — I want noodles.
Zhège, qǐng. — This one, please.
Nàge, qǐng. — That one, please.
Xièxie. — Thank you.
Dialogue 1:
A: Qǐng, wǒ yào shuǐ. (Please, I want water.)
B: Hǎo. (Okay.)
A: Xièxie. (Thank you.)
Dialogue 2:
A: Zhège, qǐng. (This one, please.)
B: Hǎo. (Okay.)
A: Wǒ yào mǐfàn. (I want rice.)
B: Hǎo. (Okay.)
Just like you say “One tea, please” or “This one, please” in India, in Chinese you can simply say Qǐng, wǒ yào chá or Zhège, qǐng. You don’t need long sentences. Short and polite is perfect.
Your Day 8 Task: Say these aloud three times: Qǐng, wǒ yào shuǐ. Qǐng, wǒ yào chá. Wǒ yào mǐfàn. Zhège, qǐng. Then practice this mini order: Qǐng, wǒ yào (your drink). Xièxie. Record your voice and listen. Check if you are clear and not rushing.
Can you say “I want …” in Chinese? Yes or No. Can you say “This one, please”? Yes or No. Can you order one drink or one food item? Yes or No. If yes, great! You can now order food and drinks in simple Chinese.
